The Department of Homeland Security again pushed back the enforcement date for REAL ID compliance, meaning that air travelers will not be required to show REAL ID-compliant forms of identification until 2025. While the REAL ID security standards were set to take effect next May, pandemic-related delays have prompted multiple deadline extensions. States have struggled to issue new forms of identification fast enough, and, as of April 2021, fewer than half of state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards were compliant.
