The government of Germany has agreed to new measures to address increased migration, including:
- A modernization effort of the IT systems to expedite asylum application processing, which currently takes 26 months on average.
- An extension of the maximum detention period for migrants from 10 to 28 days.
- Establishing “new migrant partnerships” with the countries of origin.
Germany will also apply the Schengen Border Code, which allows EU members with “the capability of temporarily reintroducing border control at the internal borders in the event of a serious threat to public policy or internal security.” Germany currently applies fixed controls to individuals entering only via the border with Austria.
