US Visa Interview Waiver Policy Update Effective October 1, 2025

Starting October 1, 2025, the US Department of State (DoS) will revise its nonimmigrant visa interview waiver policy. Under the updated guidance, most applicants — including those under 14 and over 79 — will generally be required to attend an in-person interview with a consular officer.

Exceptions to the Interview Requirement

Applicants may still qualify for an interview waiver if they meet specific criteria, including:

  • Diplomatic and Official Visa Holders:
    • Visa categories: A-1, A-2, C-3 (excluding attendants or personal employees), G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, NATO-1 through NATO-6, and TECRO E-1.
    • Applicants for diplomatic or official-type visas.
  • Renewal Applicants:
    • B-1/B-2 or Border Crossing Card (BBBCC/BBBCV): Renewing within 12 months of expiration, with prior visa issued for full validity and applicant aged 18+.
    • H-2A Visa: Same conditions as above.
Eligibility Requirements for Waiver Consideration

To qualify for an interview waiver, applicants must also:

  • Apply in their country of nationality or usual residence (except for diplomatic and certain official visas).
  • Have no prior visa refusals, unless the refusal was overcome or waived.
  • Have no apparent or potential ineligibility.

Please note: Consular officers retain discretion to require an interview on a case-by-case basis.

This update supersedes the previous guidance issued on July 25, 2025.
