U.S. and India Announce Work Visa Pilot Program and Semiconductor Training Program

President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met at the White House to discuss deals to improve military and economic ties between the two countries.

  • As part of the deal, Lam Research, a U.S.-based company that manufactures, markets, and services semiconductor processing equipment, announced a training program for up to 60,000 Indian engineers.
  • In addition, the State Department will begin a pilot program that allows a small number of Indians and other foreign workers on H-1B and L-1 visas to renew their visas in the U.S. without traveling abroad. The pilot program could be expanded in the coming years.

The Biden administration has been working for months to improve visa access for Indians as Biden wants to better connect India and the U.S., in part to be better able to compete with China.
