On June 26, 2025, the House passed the Special Interest Alien Reporting Act, H.R. 275, in a 231 to 182 vote, with 23 Democrats voting with Republicans in support of the bill.
- H.R. 275 would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to publish a list of “special interest” noncitizens who pose a national security risk to the US or its interests encountered by DHS personnel each month.
- The report would include the total number of encounters, the country of origin of the encountered individuals, the region where the encounters occurred, if the encounters occurred at airports, sea ports, land ports of entry, or in the interior of the US, and the number of noncitizens who are nationals of China, Iran, North Korea, or Russia.
Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee criticized the bill, saying it would force DHS to “publicly report sensitive national security information every month, giving bad actors real-time updates on DHS operations.”
