The UK Home Office has issued updated guidance for visa customers and applicants in the UK, visa customers outside of the UK, and British nationals overseas who need to apply for a passport affected by travel restrictions associated with coronavirus.
For Individuals in the UK
Individuals intending to leave the UK and who have a visa or leave that expires by June 30, 2021, may request additional time to stay, known as ‘exceptional assurance.’ Exceptional assurance is short-term protection against any adverse action or consequences after the leave has expired.
Visa and Immigration services are considered essential public services and will continue to operate safely under local and national restrictions. Exceptional assurance requests can be made via email and individuals should include evidence for why they are delayed.
For Individuals Intending to Stay in the UK
Individuals can file an application for permission to stay in the UK if they hold permission in a route that would normally allow them to do so, or if their current permission or visa expires before July 1.
From June 1, individuals who have been issued ‘exceptional assurance’ may apply for permission to stay to remain in the UK. Applications must be submitted before the ‘exceptional assurance’ expires.
Current permission terms will remain until the application for permission to stay is decided.
If the Visa or Leave have Expired
For individuals whose visa or leave expired between January 24, 2020, and August 31, 2020, who have not applied to regularise their stay or submitted a request for an exceptional assurance, must make arrangements to leave the UK.
