On Tuesday, March 1, the UK Home Secretary announced phase 2 of the government’s humanitarian support package for the people of Ukraine. Secretary Patel said that the measures could be implemented quickly without UK Immigration Rules or legislation changes while maintaining standard security checks.
Key Highlights
Currently, there are three extended measures for Ukrainian nationals:
- Ukrainian nationals who have family members that are British citizens resident in the UK can apply for an entry visa through Visa Application Centers in Ukraine and neighboring countries. Those joining their family in the UK will be granted leave for an initial period of 12 months, during which time they will be able to work and access public services. The usual salary and English language requirements have been rescinded.
- There is no cap on how many may apply for status under this route. Eligibility has been expanded to include extended family members — parents, grandparents, adult offspring, siblings, and their own immediate family members.
- The scheme is free, and can be accessed through an initial telephone call to the 24 hour dedicated Home Office hotline: Telephone: +44 300 3032785 – select option 1 (0300 3032785 if you’re in the UK – select option 1)
- Ukrainian nationals who do not have family ties to the UK can apply under the humanitarian sponsorship pathway, which will open a route to the UK for Ukrainians who are able to match with individuals, charities, and businesses that can provide sponsorship.
- Those who come to the UK under this route will be granted leave for an initial period of 12 months, during which time they will be able to work and access public services. The usual salary and English language requirements have been rescinded.
