US Visa Interview Waiver Policy Update Effective September 2, 2025

On July 25, 2025, the US Department of State has announced an update to its nonimmigrant visa interview waiver policy, which will take effect on September 2, 2025. Under the revised guidelines, most applicants – including those under age 14 and over age 79 – will generally be required to attend an in-person interview with a consular officer.

Who May Still Qualify for an Interview Waiver?

Interview waivers will remain available for the following categories:

  • Applicants under the following visa classifications:
    A-1, A-2, C-3 (excluding attendants or personal employees), G-1 through G-4, NATO-1 through NATO-6, and TECRO E-1
  • Applicants for diplomatic or official visas
  • Applicants renewing a full-validity B-1, B-2, B1/B2 visa, or a Border Crossing Card/Foil (for Mexican nationals), within 12 months of the prior visa’s expiration, provided they:
    • Apply in their country of nationality or residence
    • Have never been refused a visa, unless the refusal was overcome or waived
    • Have no apparent or potential ineligibility
Discretion Still Applies

Consular officers retain the discretion to require an in-person interview on a case-by-case basis, regardless of eligibility for a waiver.

What Applicants Should Do

Applicants are advised to:

  • Review the specific requirements on the website of the US embassy or consulate where they plan to apply
  • Confirm whether they qualify for an interview waiver under the updated policy
  • Monitor embassy announcements for any changes in operating status or processing timelines

This update supersedes the previous interview waiver guidance issued on February 18, 2025.
