The US Department of State has added a new option for gender, “X,” for individuals who identify as nonbinary, intersex, or gender-nonconforming. The change from the State Department follows the Biden administration’s promise to make documents and government language more inclusive.
What to Expect
- The X gender option will be available for all passport applicants by early 2022.
- DOS will update its website when the gender X option is available.
In June, DOS announced that passport applicants could select “M” or “F” for their gender even if that gender identity choice does not match other documents.
Erickson Insights
The United States is the latest country to offer a gender selection other than Male or Female. Currently, Canada, Australia, India, Malta, Nepal, and New Zealand provide a third gender option.
