The United States Introduces a Nonbinary Gender Option for US Passports

The US Department of State has added a new option for gender, “X,” for individuals who identify as nonbinary, intersex, or gender-nonconforming. The change from the State Department follows the Biden administration’s promise to make documents and government language more inclusive.
What to Expect
  • The X gender option will be available for all passport applicants by early 2022.
  • DOS will update its website when the gender X option is available.

In June, DOS announced that passport applicants could select “M” or “F” for their gender even if that gender identity choice does not match other documents.
