State Department Proposes Enhanced Social Media Check for Entry to US

The State Department has released a formal publication proposing new rules that will require most visa applicants to provide all social media usernames and accounts they have used within the last five years. Visitors should also be prepared to provide phone numbers, email addresses, international travel dates within the last five years, and details regarding any immigration problems in or outside the US. This new proposal is consistent with the current administration’s goal of instituting “extreme vetting” for those entering the US. The public will have 60 days to comment on the proposed rule.
