Beginning October 15, 2025, as confirmed by several Sri Lankan embassies, including those in France, Indonesia, and Türkiye, all foreign travelers must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before departing for Sri Lanka. The option to apply for an ETA upon arrival will no longer be available, marking a significant change in the country’s entry requirements.
What’s Changing?
- Previous Policy: Travelers could apply for an ETA either online before departure or upon arrival at the airport.
- New Rule: ETA must be obtained online in advance via the official portal: eta.gov.lk.
- Effective Date: October 15, 2025
- Applies to: All foreign nationals, including those from countries currently benefiting from ETA fee waivers (e.g., China, India, Russia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan).
ETA Fee Waiver Expansion
Sri Lanka has proposed extending its ETA fee waiver to 33 additional countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and others. However, this initiative has not yet been finalized, and all travelers must currently pay the standard ETA fee when applying online.
ETA Application Overview
- Where to Apply: eta.gov.lk
- Fee: USD 50 for a double-entry ETA
- Validity: 6 months from the date of issue
- Authorized Stay: Up to 30 days, with the option to extend through local immigration offices
