November Government Shutdown Averted

Late Wednesday night, the Senate approved a bill to provide stop-gap funding to the Federal Government. The House of Representatives approved the bill on Tuesday with a nearly unanimous vote.

President Biden is expected to sign off before the deadline, midnight on Friday, November 17. The government will not shut down.

What’s next:  The bill extends funding at current spending levels for approximately 20 percent of the federal government until January 19 and the rest of the government until February 2.

  • Funding for all immigration processing is included in the latter group to give lawmakers more time to negotiate the parameters of immigration funding.

  • Funding for the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, and Department of Labor is set to expire on February 2, 2024.

The bill does not include additional supplemental funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, or U.S. border security, as requested by the Biden administration.
