Malaysia Enhances MyVISA Photo Verification Through ESD Online

Malaysia’s Expatriate Services Division (ESD) has announced a new Photo Verification feature for Visa With Reference (VDR) and Electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL) applications through the ESD Online portal. The enhancement will take effect on August 21, 2026 and is designed to help applicants and employers ensure passport photos meet MyVISA requirements before expatriate applications are submitted.

What’s Changing?

Beginning August 21, 2026, ESD Online will introduce a dedicated Photo Verification section that allows passport photos to be validated against the required specifications prior to submission.

The initiative is intended to:

  • Improve application quality.
  • Reduce delays caused by non-compliant passport photographs.
  • Streamline the MyVISA application process.
  • Minimize rejections and correction requests during processing.
Public Photo Verification for Applicants

One of the most notable enhancements is that applicants will be able to access the photo verification tool without logging into ESD Online.

Through the ESD Online landing page, applicants can:

  • Upload and verify passport photographs.
  • Confirm compliance with MyVISA photo requirements.
  • Resolve photo issues before sending documents to their employer or sponsor.

This allows applicants to complete photo validation earlier in the process and avoid potential delays during application submission.

Photo Verification for Employers

ESD is also integrating the verification feature directly into the employer application workflow.

The authorized company representative listed in the Letter of Undertaking (LOU) will be able to:

  • Recheck the applicant’s passport photo within ESD Online.
  • Confirm compliance with required specifications.
  • Validate photos before submitting expatriate pass applications.

This additional review step is expected to reduce processing issues arising from photo-related errors.

Impact on Expatriate Applications

ESD has indicated that the enhancement is intended to improve application accuracy rather than introduce new requirements.

As a result, the update is not expected to affect existing processing timelines for:

  • Employment Pass applications
  • Professional Visit Pass applications
  • Related expatriate immigration submissions processed through ESD

Instead, the goal is to reduce avoidable delays caused by photograph deficiencies that are often discovered later in the MyVISA process.
