White House Considers NAFTA Withdrawal

April 26, 2017

Today in the White House, the H-1B program reform takes a backseat as the administration discusses a potential withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). White House officials indicated that the administration is currently working on an executive order, which may be released in the upcoming weeks, and would serve to notify the other parties, Mexico and Canada, of the United States’s intent to withdraw itself from the trade deal. This order would be consistent with President Trump’s continued effort to promote his “America First” approach.

At this time there are no further details available regarding the terms and content of this new order. According to a senior official of the White House, it will most likely call for Mexico and Canada to renegotiate the deal, rather than an outright withdrawal.

EIG attorneys are closely monitoring the news and potential executive order regarding the NAFTA trade deal. We will continue to keep you informed as more information is made available.
