Italy Proposes Stricter Family Reunification and Immigration Measures

On February 11, 2026, the government approved a bill that includes provisions on international protection, the implementation of the European Union Pact on Migration and Asylum of May 14, 2024, and changes to the family reunification rules.

The draft law aims to strengthen the tools to combat illegal immigration and ensure a more rigorous migration management.

The main objectives of the law are as follows:

  • Combating illegal immigration;
  • Stricter requirements for family reunification;
  • Amendments to the law on the reception of those seeking international protection and on penalties for non-compliance;
  • Implementation of EU directives and regulations.

The bill must be passed by both houses of the Italian parliament before it becomes law.
