Italy Ends Travel Ban for Southern African Countries

The Government of Italy has ended the travel ban that was imposed in late November against southern African countries, South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. The countries will now be part of Italy’s List E.

The entry ban was introduced to stop the spread of the Omicron variant.  However, since the Omicron variant is now widely spread within the European Union and the Schengen Area, the authorities believe that it is no longer needed to keep strict restrictions against only some specific countries.

What to Expect

Travelers coming from a List E country must:

  • Provide a specific reason for their trip — options include work, health, study, and other purposes.
  • Complete a Digital Locator Form.
  • Present the results of a pre-entry PCR or rapid antigen test. The PCR test must be taken within 72 hours before arrival in Italy, and the rapid antigen test must be taken within 24 hours before entry. Testing is required for all travelers over six years old.
  • Self-isolate for ten days and undergo a second test at the end of the quarantine period.
