Hong Kong Launches Facial Recognition e-Channels for National Games Athletes

The Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) has launched a new facial recognition-based immigration clearance system at four major border control points to support the 15th National Games. The initiative, which went live on Sunday, October 27, is designed to streamline border processing for approximately 5,000 athletes and support staff, enabling them to clear immigration in as little as seven seconds.

Where the System Is Deployed

Sixteen dedicated self-service facial recognition gates have been installed across the following key ports:

  • Hong Kong International Airport
  • West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station
  • Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge
  • Shenzhen Bay Port

Each location features two inbound and two outbound channels, converted from existing e-gates, exclusively for accredited National Games participants.

How It Works

Registered athletes and staff can use the facial recognition lanes after completing one standard immigration clearance. For subsequent entries and exits, they can pass through the designated gates without presenting physical documents, marking the first full-scale adoption of facial recognition technology for border clearance in Hong Kong.

Local athletes are also eligible to use the new system.

Closed-Loop Security for Cross-Border Events

For cross-border races, Hong Kong authorities will:

  • Pre-register athletes and staff on a “white list”
  • Deploy GPS-enabled bracelets and RFID devices for real-time tracking
  • Station immigration officers at race starting points in Zhuhai and Shenzhen Bay

Only authorized individuals will be allowed to enter the closed-loop zones, ensuring tight security and compliance.

Public Access Unaffected

Officials have confirmed that the dedicated e-Channels will not impact the general public’s use of immigration checkpoints. Additional counters will be opened as needed to manage passenger flow.
