Germany Sets Sights on Attracting New Skilled Workers

Germany’s newly formed coalition government announced plans to attract 400,000 skilled workers each year.  The new workers to Germany are meant to offset an aging demographic and labor shortages.

“We can only get the problem of an aging workforce under control with a modern immigration policy… We have to reach the mark of 400,000 skilled workers from abroad as quickly as possible,” Christian Duerr, parliamentary leader of the co-governing Free Democrats (FDP) said to German media.

Plans include a points system for specialists from outside the European Union and increasing the national minimum wage to 12 euros per hour.
