EU Council Welcomes Proposal to Extend Temporary Protection

In a statement on June 13, 2024, the EU Council welcomed the proposal to extend the temporary protection for the more than 4 million Ukrainians fleeing from Russia’s war of aggression until March 4, 2026.

The temporary protection mechanism was triggered on March 4, 2022 and is due to run until March 4, 2025. The proposal to further extend the temporary protection until March 4, 2026 comes in a context of volatility of the situation in Ukraine.

The extension does not change the decision of March 2022 in terms of the categories of persons to whom the temporary protection applies.

The Council will formally adopt the decision to extend the temporary protection once the legal scrubbing and translation into all EU languages has taken place.
