On June 18, 2024, the government of Ecuador announced it would suspend the visa waiver agreement with China that allowed Chinese nationals to enter the country visa free. The suspension will begin on July 1, 2024.
The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said the suspension would be temporary and is the result of irregular migration patterns and that 50% of the Chinese nationals entering the country didn’t leave through regular routes or within the permitted 90 days.
Ecuador and the Republic of Suriname were the only two mainland countries in the Americas that offered visa-free entry to Chinese nationals.
