DHS Terminates TPS for Somalia

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Somalia will end on March 17, 2026. This decision follows a review of current country conditions and applicable legal requirements.

Background

Somalia was first designated for TPS in 1991 due to ongoing armed conflict and humanitarian crises. TPS allows nationals of designated countries to remain temporarily in the United States when conditions in their home country prevent safe return. DHS is required to review each designation at least 60 days before its expiration to determine whether conditions still warrant protection.

Over the years, Somalia’s TPS designation has been extended multiple times due to persistent instability and natural disasters. However, DHS has now determined that conditions have improved sufficiently and no longer meet the criteria for TPS under US immigration law.

Next Steps
  • TPS for Somalia will terminate on March 17, 2026.
  • Individuals without another lawful immigration status should prepare for departure before the effective date.
  • DHS encourages individuals returning home to use the CBP Home app to report departure.
