The Chinese Embassy in the United States has officially launched a new online visa application system (COVA) as of September 30, 2025, streamlining the process for travelers applying for visas to China. This update applies to applicants residing in the embassy’s consular jurisdiction, which includes Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, and 13 other states.
Key Changes in the Visa Application Process
- Applicants must now use the New COVA System to:
- Fill out visa application forms
- Upload required documents for preliminary review
- Once the application status shows “Passport to be submitted,” applicants must visit the Visa Office in person with:
- Their passport
- Barcode-stamped application info page
- Original supporting documents
Required Documents for Online Submission
- Passport bio-page and blank visa page (valid for at least 6 months)
- Visa Application Statement (signed)
- Proof of US residence (e.g., driver’s license, utility bill)
- Legal status documents (e.g., green card, visa, I-20, I-94)
- Additional documents for applicants of Chinese origin or minors
Processing Times and Fees
- Regular service: 4 business days
- Express service: 3 business days (additional fee applies)
- Payment methods: Credit card (Visa/MasterCard), money order, or cashier’s check
