Recently, IRCC announced their intention to introduce a facilitated process to extend certain open work permits expiring between August 1 – December 31, 2023.
As of June 7, 2023, the IRCC have started sending out emails to those likely eligible to opt-in, and the email confirms the process to follow as well as eligibility requirements (see below for screenshot from within the portal showing eligibility). The process itself is largely a mirror of the recent PGWP opt-in process, so should be very simple.
Key Information
- The window for opting in (for those who qualify) is June 7-28, 2023.
- Applicants who are contacted by IRCC as opt-in eligible must log in to their MyCIC account, confirm their mailing address, and biometrics and passport validity (which must be valid for 18+ months).
- The new OWP should be received by July 31, 2023.
- The opt-in process can also be done through the Representative Portal.
Once the opt-in window closes, anyone eligible for the 18-month extension will be required to submit a full application.
