From July 23, 2024, foreign nationals traveling to Japan for tourism purposes can apply for a visa online and receive an electronic visa (eVISA) through the JAPAN eVISA system.
The eVISA is available to all foreign nationals/people residing in Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates (except the jurisdiction of The Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai (Note)), the United Kingdom, and the United States, except those who are exempt from short-term visa, can apply for an eVISA through the JAPAN eVISA website.
- The online visa application via the JAPAN eVISA system is currently not available at the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai.
- From July 23, 2024, at 16:00 JST (0:00 PDT) online visa applications from residents within the jurisdiction of Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle, Denver, Houston, and the Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage and Portland will be submitted to the Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles.
Applications should be submitted through an accredited agency. For details, applicants are advised to check the website of the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over their place of residence.
Key Application Notes
- The JAPAN eVISA is available only to those who travel to Japan by plane.
- During the application process, the applicant may be requested to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over the place of the applicant’s residence for an interview.
- Only ordinary passport holders are eligible to apply through JAPAN eVISA website.
