USCIS has issued guidance regarding the ongoing processing delays the agency is experiencing for Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal. Because of the delays, applicants who have properly filed Form I-589 may not receive a receipt notice in a timely manner. The agency asks that people not submit multiple Forms I-589, as this further contributes to the processing delays.
The filing date will be the date that USCIS received the properly filed Form I-589, not the date it was processed, for the following:
- For purposes of the asylum one-year filing deadline,
- affirmative asylum interview scheduling priorities,
- Employment Authorization Document eligibility based on a pending asylum application
