US State Department Lifts Consular Prioritization Guidance

On Friday, November 19, 2021, the US Department of State rescinded the November 2020 guidance to consular posts to prioritize consular services. Embassies and consulates have broad discretion to prioritize visa appointments among the range of visa classes as safely as possible.

The guidance change follows President Biden’s proclamation regarding the safe resumption of international travel. The Bureau of Consular Affairs will focus on reducing wait times for all consular services at embassies and consulates overseas. Conditions and restrictions at individual consular posts may continue to fluctuate based on location.
