US State Department Adjusts Criteria for COVID-19 Related Travel Advisories

In a note to the media on April 14, 2022, the U.S. State Department announced it had reassessed how COVID-19 considerations factor into the Department’s Travel Advisory levels for U.S. citizens. The State Department’s announcement follows recent changes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) COVID-19 Travel Health Notice (THN) process and as international travel and COVID-19 test and vaccine availability continue to increase.

Key Changes
  • The State Department Travel Advisory levels will no longer automatically correlate with the CDC COVID-19 THN level.
  • However, when the CDC classifies a country as a Level 4, the State Department will also raise the travel advisory to Level 4: Do Not Travel due to COVID-19.
  • The US government advises travelers to monitor COVID-19 conditions and restrictions at their destination when planning international travel.
