On August 21, 2025, the Secretary of State announced that, effective immediately, the government has paused all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers.
Background:
- In April 2025, the President ordered the enforcement of existing regulations requiring commercial truck drivers to meet certain English-language proficiency and driver licensing standards.
- In May, the Secretary of Transportation signed an order announcing new guidance to enforce English proficiency requirement for truckers.
- On August 19, 2025, the Secretary of Transportation announced an investigation into a fatal truck crash in Florida, after it was found that the truck driver did not speak English.
