US Halts Work Visas for Commercial Truck Drivers Over Safety Concerns

On August 21, 2025, the Secretary of State announced that, effective immediately, the government has paused all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers.

Background:
  • In April 2025, the President ordered the enforcement of existing regulations requiring commercial truck drivers to meet certain English-language proficiency and driver licensing standards.
  • In May, the Secretary of Transportation signed an order announcing new guidance to enforce English proficiency requirement for truckers.
  • On August 19, 2025, the Secretary of Transportation announced an investigation into a fatal truck crash in Florida, after it was found that the truck driver did not speak English.
