The UAE will require a mandatory insurance program for all private sector employees and domestic workers from January 1, 2025.
The new scheme will apply nationwide, expanding the current mandatory plans which are applicable only for employees in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
- In Abu Dhabi, employers must offer coverage for the employee and their family (one spouse and three children up to 18 years of age.
- In Dubai, employers must provide a heath insurance program for their employees. The employee is responsible for registering their family members.
At present, it is not known if in the nationwide program employers will be required to provide health insurance for their employees’ family members. Employers will need to get a healthcare package for their employees as part of the process for issuing or renewing residency permits.
