Thailand to Implement Automated Biometric ID System at International Airports

Starting November 1, 2024, Thailand will implement an automated biometric identification system at six major international airports. This initiative will utilize facial recognition technology to streamline passenger identification and reduce wait times, ensuring a more efficient travel experience. Biometric checks may not apply to certain nationalities, which will be announced at a later date.

Key Details
  • Launch Schedule: The system will be available for domestic travelers beginning November 1, with international travelers gaining access starting December 1. However, for travelers holding a Hong Kong or Singapore passport, this system is available immediately.
  • Eligibility: This system does not apply to holders of long-term visas, who must enter through the usual check-in channels.
  • Airports Included: The six airports that will use the system are Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Mae Fah Luang/Chiang Rai International Airport, Phuket International Airport, and Hat Yai International Airport.
What to Expect
  • Biometric Enrollment Process: Passengers can complete biometric enrollment at airline counters or self-check-in kiosks, where facial data will be captured alongside passport scans. This data will be registered once with a single-use consent, and will apply throughout the entire journey.
  • Benefits: With biometric data collected, passengers can move seamlessly through check-in, baggage handling, security, and immigration without needing to present identification multiple times, enhancing convenience and speed.
