Sweden Launches Digital Passport Checks for Work Permit Applicants

The Swedish Migration Agency has launched a new process for applicants for a Swedish work or student permit to verify their passports digitally instead of traveling to a Swedish embassy.

What to Expect
  • Applicants will now be able to download an app on their phone, scan their passport and perform facial recognition to identify themselves for their residence permit applications for studies and work.
  • An email containing a link to the e-service will be sent out from the Migration Agency within a few days after applying. The link is valid for one week.

The Swedish Migration Agency is also sending the offer to certain people who have made an application in 2024 but have not yet shown their passport. The benefit to verify digitally for applications already submitted is currently available only to individuals from one of the 23 countries participating in the pilot program. These countries are: USA, Canada, Albania, Argentina, Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Georgia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Peru, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
