In a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Haiti, the Department of State urged U.S. citizens to leave Haiti as soon as possible, citing that rising gang violence could make travel difficult.
Violence has risen since the murder of former Haitian President Jovenel Moise in 2021. In July, the State Department evacuated all non-essential staff and diplomatic family members from the embassy, citing increased gang violence in Haiti’s capital. Political unrest and poverty have led to more Haitians leaving their homes and seeking asylum in the U.S., and DHS has stopped or deported around 125,688 Haitians this fiscal year.
The Biden administration has continued conducting deportation flights to Haiti even after the State Department released its advisory.
