Reports: DOS to Review Social Media of H-1B Applicants and Spouses for “Censorship” Involvement

According to media reports regarding a State Department Cable, the Trump administration will increase vetting for H-1B visa applicants, and their dependent spouses, specifically with consideration for anyone involved in the “censorship” of free speech.

The instructions were outlined in a State Department cable sent to US missions abroad on December 2, 2025: “BE ON THE LOOKOUT: APPLICANTS RESPONSIBLE FOR OR COMPLICIT IN CENSORSHIP OF AMERICANS.” (Bloomberg, Reuters)

This reported cable is consistent, but expands upon a State Department announcement of Expanded Screening and Vetting for H-1B and Dependent H-4 Visa Applicants.

Consular officers are encouraged to review resumes and LinkedIn pages, as well as articles in trade publications.
