Rwanda Expands Visa‑Free Entry for African Union Citizens to Boost Tourism

As part of a broader strategy to attract more mid‑range tourists, the Rwandan government has introduced significant changes to its entry requirements, expanding visa‑free access for African nationals and travelers already present elsewhere on the continent.

Nationals of all 55 African Union member states are now permitted to enter Rwanda without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. In addition, citizens of neighboring countries within the East African region — including Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo — may remain visa‑free for up to 60 days, despite Rwanda not being a formal member of the East African Community.

Rwanda has also signed bilateral travel agreements with Togo and Liberia, allowing travelers who are already legally present in one of these countries to enter Rwanda without obtaining an additional visa.

These measures reflect Rwanda’s efforts to enhance regional mobility, promote tourism, and strengthen economic and travel ties across Africa.
