On Monday, Feb. 10, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) asserting that the Trump Administration’s policy to suspend enrollment and re-enrollment in the federal government’s Trusted Traveler Programs, such as Global Entry, for New Yorkers unfairly targets the state.
This policy is in response to the Green Light Law, which allows New Yorkers without legal immigration status to get a driver’s license. The Green Light Law also restricts DHS from obtaining DMV data, a measure that could further protect immigrant communities.
The ban by the Trump administration is part of its efforts to restrict sanctuary cities and states, which New York is. The suit contends that the ban violates the 10th Amendment’s protection of state sovereignty.
“The president’s new policy will negatively impact hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, travelers and workers within a year,” James said. “It will slow down commerce. It will cost our economy. All while posing a significant threat to public safety.”
