Ongoing NAFTA negotiations could lead to a reduction in the number of TN visas issued to Canadian and Mexican professionals. The Trump administration wants to limit both the number of TN-eligible professions and the number of visa extensions allowed. Canada is resisting such efforts, arguing that the TN visa is necessary to fill critical labor needs in both countries and that any disruption could irreparably harm the operations of some 500 companies. Republican Congressman Steve King has nevertheless stressed during negotiations the importance of respecting Congress’s specific authority in establishing immigration law.
