The Government of Mexico has introduced electronic Mexican passports, to provide a secure and internationally standardized document.
The implementation of the electronic passport is the result of a two-year process with the support of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the Public Function Secretary.
Key Changes
- Mexican passports will still be printed in physical notebooks but going forward, they will include a polycarbonate sheet and a chip where the person’s information is electronically stored.
- There are no changes to the fee for a Mexican passport.
- For passports for minors, a printout is added on the first sheet of colored paper, which contains the information on who exercises parental authority over the minor.
From October 5, the transition plan for the adoption of the electronic passport will be implemented in all Mexican consular offices abroad. The plan is that by January 2022, all offices will be able to issue the new passport.
