Japan Increases Border Measures

The Government of Japan has announced increased border measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, including the suspension of new entry of foreign nationals.
Key Highlights
  • As an emergency preventative measure, the new entry of foreign nationals is suspended for the time being. Please see more information on special exceptional circumstances.
  • All cross-border travelers and returnees have to submit negative COVID-19 test results conducted within 72 hours of departure. Upon arrival, they are required to test again at the time of entry and complete a 14-day quarantine at a designated location. Please see more information about Quarantine measures.
  • The re-entry into Japan of foreign nationals with residence status who have stayed in Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe within 14 days prior to landing will be denied from December 2, 2021 (only Democratic Republic of the Congo is from December 12, 2021).

 

Visas issued before December 2, 2021, are suspended except for those issued for “Spouse or Child of a Japanese National,” “Spouse or Child of a Permanent Resident,” or Diplomat.
