On April 5, 2024, the government of Italy introduced a new online priority processing system for urgent passport requests. The new system, the Agenda Prioritaria (or ‘Priority Agenda’), is accessed via the the Italian State Police portal.
What to Expect of the New Priority Processing
- Italian citizens in urgent need of a new passport can get their application or renewal appointment within 15 days and their new documents within a maximum of 30 days.
- Applicants for priority services must prove the expedited passport is needed for health, study, work trips, or tourism.
- Applicants must complete a self-certification (autocertificazione) form online and present their documents at the scheduled appointment at the local Questura (police headquarters).
According to reports, the lengthy way times, which were attributed to the post-COVID backlog, caused nearly 170,000 international trips to be canceled between 2022 and 2023.
