The Government of Ireland has announced changes to the citizenship application process to go into effect as of January 1, 2022.
Key Highlights from January 1, 2022
- New applicants for citizenship can submit a full-color copy of their entire passport, instead of the original document, with the initial application.
- The copy must be witnessed by a solicitor and submitted with the application form.
- The Department of Justice will move to a “scorecard approach,” which will clarify what information applicants need to provide to prove identity and residency and the number of proofs required.

Individuals with travel plans that will require the use of their passport between now and the beginning of the year may want to wait to submit their citizenship application until the new guidance applies. The government will provide further updates in the coming weeks.
