India Expands E-Passport Tools

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is introducing upgraded services under the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) with e-Passports with modern security features.

Key Features
  • The e-Passport will be embedded with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip that stores the passport holder’s biometric and personal information in encrypted form.
  • The digital tool should enable faster review at immigration counters, and reduce fraud.
  • Newly issued passports will all be e-Passports. Non-e-Passports will remain valid until their expiration.

The Passport Seva Programme Version 2.o was first implemented in May 2025, and is now widely operational across Passport Offices, Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), post office centers. From October 28, 2025, the Global Passport Seva Programme Version 2.0 (GPSP V2.0), expands these services to Indian Embassies and Consulates worldwide.
