Germany’s New Government to Permit Dual Citizenship

The newly formed German government announced plans to permit dual citizenship and said it is considering shortening the timeline to become a citizen to just five years.

Under current German law, dual citizenship is only available to citizenship applicants who are born with dual citizenship (i.e., to a German citizen parent and non-German citizen parent), EU or Swiss citizens, citizens of countries that do not permit citizens to renounce their citizenship, or those who, by giving up their citizenship, would face economic hardship.

Currently, a foreigner would have to live in Germany for eight years with a residence permit before applying for citizenship.
