Germany’s government will impose increased border restrictions and controls at all of the country’s land borders. According to the reports, the measures are meant to address irregular migration and terror threats. Germany shares its land border with Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland.
What to Expect
- The controls will start on September 16 and initially last for six months.
- The government has also designed a scheme enabling authorities to reject more migrants directly at German borders. Details have not been shared to explain how or why rejections would be issued.
Erickson Insights & Analsyis
The border control changes are a shift in course for Germany, and as a Schengen area country. Under EU rules, countries are only allowed to introduce border checks as a last resort to avert threats to internal security or public policy.
