German Opportunity Card to Enter into Effect June 1

As of June 1, 2024, Germany’s “Opportunity Card” will come into effect as a core element of the Skilled Immigration Act. This temporary residence permit for skilled workers from third countries allows them to search for employment in Germany without needing to present a fixed employment contract beforehand.

Key Details of the Opportunity Card
  • The Opportunity Card allows foreigners and asylum seekers to work an average of 20 hours per week and engage in trial employment of up to two weeks with potential employers.
  • The employment must be qualified or aim at professional training.
  • An extension of the card for up to two years is possible under certain conditions.
  • The allocation of the Opportunity Card is based on a points system that considers factors such as language skills (German A1 or English B2), level of education, age, and other qualifications. To obtain the card, at least six points must be achieved.
