DHS Terminates TPS For Syria

On September 19, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syria, on the basis that conditions in Syria no longer meet the statutory requirements for Temporary Protected Status.

  • The announcement stated that Syrian nationals have 60 days to leave the US and that the conditions in the country have improved such that Syrian nationals no longer need protection.

  • DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin also said in a statement that it is not in the national interest of the US to allow Syrians to remain in the country, as Syria is a “hotbed of terrorism and extremism.”

  • Around 3,750 Syrian nationals are in the US under TPS as of September 2024.
