DHS Automatically Extends Temporary Protected Status for Lebanon Through November 2026

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a six‑month automatic extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Lebanon, extending protections from May 28, 2026, through November 27, 2026.

The extension was published in a Federal Register notice and follows statutory requirements governing TPS designations.

Background

Under U.S. immigration law, if DHS does not make a determination on whether a country continues to qualify for TPS at least 60 days before the designation’s expiration, the designation is automatically extended for six months.

In this case, DHS did not reach a decision by the March 28, 2026 deadline, triggering the automatic extension provision.

Reason for Delay in Determination

DHS officials indicated that the delay was due to rapidly evolving conditions in Lebanon, which required additional review.

Both former Secretary Noem and current Secretary Markwayne Mullin — who assumed office on March 24, 2026 — were unable to complete a comprehensive assessment of country conditions in time to meet the statutory deadline.

The ongoing developments in Lebanon necessitated further analysis before a determination could be made regarding whether the TPS designation should be extended, redesignated, or terminated.

Impact on TPS Beneficiaries

As a result of the automatic extension:

  • Current TPS beneficiaries from Lebanon may continue to maintain their status through November 27, 2026, provided they remain eligible
  • Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) issued under Lebanon’s TPS designation are automatically extended through the same date
  • No immediate action is required from beneficiaries to maintain TPS during this extension period
What’s Next

During the six‑month extension period, DHS is expected to complete its review of country conditions in Lebanon and issue a formal decision regarding the future of the TPS designation.

Possible outcomes include:

  • A full extension of TPS
  • A redesignation (which could allow new applicants)
  • A termination of TPS for Lebanon
