Effective May 1, 2018, European Union (EU) citizens traveling or working outside the EU are entitled to consular protection from any other EU member state if their home country is not represented. This applies to situations including natural disaster, illness, arrest, or the need for a travel document. In order to receive assistance, the traveler must verify EU citizenship with a valid passport, identity card, or other documents.
