Colombia Reopens Borders with Most Neighbors

On Wednesday, May 19, Colombia reopened its land and water borders with immediate neighbors Panama, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. The border between Colombia and Venezuela remains closed.

Background

In March 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Colombia’s government closed its borders. In September, international flights resumed on a limited basis. In November, the country’s sea borders reopened, but the land and river entry points remained closed.

Colombia implemented a five-month quarantine in 2020, which had significant negative impacts on the economy.
