On December 6, 2024, China has introduced the “Join in Card,” a new integrated identification tool that combines a foreign national’s work permit and social security card into a single credential. Available in both physical and digital formats, the card is designed to streamline access to public services and simplify administrative procedures for expatriates living and working in China.
Key Features and Benefits
The “Join in Card” enables foreign nationals to access 264 public services across sectors such as:
- Government affairs
- Transportation
- Tourism and cultural venues
- Financial services
- Healthcare
With this card, expats no longer need to carry their passports or multiple certificates to access services like hospital registration, library access, or public transportation.
Expanded Access Across China
According to local authorities, cardholders can:
- Use public transit in 336 cities
- Visit 2,825 cultural and tourism venues in the Yangtze River Delta region
- Access healthcare and purchase medication at tens of thousands of institutions in 41 cities
Simplified Application Process
Previously, foreign nationals had to visit multiple government departments and submit duplicate paperwork to obtain both a work permit and social security card—a process that could take up to a month. Now, applicants can:
- Apply online once
- Receive the physical card within 10 days
- Access a digital version immediately
