Chile Removes Visa Requirement for Australian Citizens

Effective September 17, 2025, Australian passport holders no longer require a visa to enter Chile for short stays of up to 90 days. The Chilean government announced the change unexpectedly, and it took effect immediately.

New Entry Conditions

According to the Chilean Consulate in Sydney, Australian citizens may now:

  • Enter Chile without a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
  • Apply for a 90-day extension if needed.
  • Continue to complete a digital customs declaration before departure or upon arrival.

Note: Entry requirements for Easter Island may differ and should be checked separately.

Background: Previous Visa Requirements

Prior to this change, Australians were required to obtain a visa to enter Chile, including for transit purposes. This replaced the earlier reciprocity fee system, which had been in place until 2020. That fee mirrored the cost of an Australian visa for Chilean citizens and was payable upon arrival in Santiago.

While Chile has now waived visa requirements for Australians, Australia still requires Chilean citizens to apply for an e-visa before entering.
